Signs to look for

  • A steady stream of wasps flying in and out of one point in the roofline, a wall or the ground
  • A grey, papery ball in the loft, the shed, a bird box or under the eaves
  • Chewing or scraping noises from a wall cavity on warm afternoons
  • More wasps than usual around bins, windows and the garden table from July

How we treat it

  • Treatment dust puffed into the nest entrance, which returning wasps carry inside
  • The nest left in place to die off, so the colony does not scatter and sting
  • A same-day check that activity is falling, and advice on keeping windows shut for 24 hours

A wasp nest starts in spring as a single queen building something the size of a golf ball. By August it can hold several thousand wasps and be the size of a football, usually somewhere you cannot see it: in the loft, behind a soffit board or in a cavity wall.

Finding the nest

You rarely need to find the nest itself. What matters is the entrance, the point where the wasps fly in and out in a steady line. Stand back on a warm afternoon and watch the roofline for a few minutes. If you can see where they go in, tell us when you book and we will bring the right pole length.

How the treatment works

We puff an insecticidal dust into the entrance from a telescopic pole. The wasps walk through it on the way in and carry it deep into the nest. Activity drops within hours and the nest is dead within a day. We leave it in place, because cutting out a live nest scatters the colony and that is when people get stung.

Stay out of that part of the garden for the rest of the day and keep nearby windows closed until the next morning. A few stragglers may fly around the entrance for a day or two. That is normal.

The guarantee

If the nest is still active 48 hours after treatment, we come back free. Nests in the same spot the following year are new colonies, not a failed treatment, but we still offer returning customers a £15 discount.
