Signs to look for

  • Itchy bites in a line or cluster on skin that was uncovered in bed
  • Small dark spots, like marker dots, along the mattress seams and bed frame joints
  • Tiny pale shed skins or live insects the size of an apple pip in the seams
  • Rust-coloured marks on sheets or pillowcases
  • A faint sweet, musty smell in a heavily affected room

How we treat it

  • An inspection of every bedroom and sofa to map how far they have spread
  • A residual treatment to seams, frames, skirting and sockets in each affected room
  • Steam on mattresses and upholstery that cannot take a spray
  • A second full treatment 14 days later to catch the eggs that have since hatched

Bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean a home is. They travel in luggage, second-hand furniture and on coats, and they are as common in hotels and new-build flats as in anywhere else. What they need is a sleeping person nearby.

Why two treatments

No treatment kills bed bug eggs reliably. So we treat twice, 14 days apart: the first visit clears the adults and nymphs, and the second catches everything that has hatched in between, before it is old enough to lay eggs of its own. A third check at four weeks confirms the room is clear.

What the treatment involves

We start with an inspection of every bedroom, the sofa and anywhere people fall asleep. Then each affected room gets a residual treatment to the seams and joints of the bed, the skirting, the edges of carpets, sockets and picture frames. Mattresses and upholstered furniture that cannot take a spray are steamed. We fit zipped encasements if you want them, at cost.

Preparing for the visit

Preparation makes the difference between two visits and four. Wash bedding and clothes from the affected rooms at 60°C or tumble dry them hot for 30 minutes, then keep them bagged until the second treatment. Clear the floor and the space under the bed. Do not move to the sofa or a spare room; that spreads them. Our checklist, sent with the booking confirmation, covers the rest.
